I had come out to myself when I was 19. Within a year after that I joined the Royal Garde.
I was not “open”, but I wasn’t really hiding it either. It took me four years to find out that throughout my service all the guys knew I was gay. Nobody said anything, though. I learned that they had been talking about it a lot, while I was out of the military place. They just treated me as usual and gave me peace.
That more than I can say about the teachers and psycologist I ran over later in life.March 17th, 2010 at 5:23 am -

You know, that is maybe the begining of true equality… being gay being a non-issue! Way to go!

Great story. Inspiring to anyone who knows what they’re up against when they get honest!

boring!
just to all the homophobic people out there: STOP BEING SO IGNORANT!
and to all the people who use the name of “God” to fight against homosexuality: “really, do you think of “the creator” as someone judgmental who only loves heterosexual people?
Honestly, if “God” hates a 9 year old who is realizing he is attracted to his/her same sex then I rather not believe in one at all.
Freaking love everyone, at the end of the day if you think we are sinning then we are not u!
Peace

I guess that’s why no one’s claiming it’s representative of the majority then, huh.

one wonders why you would then look up videos to watch on youtube with titles like “true gay stories” then.

Sounds like he had a pretty easy coming out. Especially for a football player!

Not too hard for Brian’s teammates or anyone else for that matter to figure out the gay orientation. Guess this is OK if we still need to be promoting coming out stories in 2010. Guess I’m just tired of hearing them.

That’s bollocks. This is supposed to help LGBT teens? Yeah, how many are going to be able to identify with the Captain of a football team with 90 subordinates at his side? Most LGBT teens will spend their time avoiding the alphamale mentality of a sports team. Good for this dude, but his ‘coming out’ was a bed of roses, clearly. This is not going to be representative of the struggle that the majority will face in coming out at High School.

In my experience, when a guy pulls you aside and says privately, “I heard, it’s really cool, I’m okay with that,” it can be a hint at curiosity.

Thanks so much Brian for sharing your story. This type of experience told from the perspective of an athlete gives substantive meaning to team unity. Your fellow team mates deserve equal respect for their candor and maturity; they were, and I suspect, continue to be, in a way, some of your own heroes. Thanks again!
