I am a black lesbian american visiting Queensland Au. Anyone know of any friendly communities?

I will be traveling alone to Queensland in perhaps my summer June/July 2008. Anyone know any gay/lesbian friendly or Places that don’t discriminate against black americans much? Any info will be helpful thanks.

    I doubt you’ll cop much racism…

I’m from the south of the country (not QLD)….but you’d be unlikely to have any hassles

Your best spots in Brisbane to go are Fortitude Valley & Spring Hill (both really close to the city centre) & West End (also close to town but on the the other side of the river). Spring Hill has a few gay/lesbian bars but the most popular bar/pub is called The Wickham…on Wickham St. It’s gay/lesbian but also straight friendly. Very good atmosphere. They hold the ‘Big Gay Day’ every year. There’s a Pride march in…March. Hehe. In Spring Hill (just up the street) there’s the Sportsman’s and the Alliance, both on St Paul’s Terrace.

But…the ICON of Brisbane clubs, gay or straight…is the Beat, on Ann Street. They’ve been around for years, and they have a dedicated club for lesbians called the Cockatoo Club upstairs. The only thing about it is…there’s a cover charge.

We are pretty relaxed here in Australia. That’s what makes this country so great!

So, relax and enjoy the sun up in Queensland =)

Freya is right. Noosa, on the Sunshine Coast, which is not far north of Brisbane will be a great place to visit. You can swim at lovely beaches too. There are a lot of different alternative-lifestyle community people on the Sunshine Coast and Noosa is where the action is at. I have a friend there who bought a holiday house and he rents it out almost all through the year to gays from overseas.

Queenslanders are alright and friendly. They all watch American TV and will recognise that you’re not an Australian black (the Aboriginals who do sometimes get discriminated against). You’ll just be another tourist. Blokes will probably try to crack onto you ;)
People in remote towns in our deep north might stare because you look interesting to them (we don’t have many African immigrants in Australia). But don’t assume that their staring is discriminatory. Noone is going to refuse you a drink in a bar or move away because you sit next to them on the bus. But if you’re impatient, arrogant or talk really loudly in public you might get a few not-so-nice stares, only because Aussies just don’t like those sorts of Americans no matter what colour or sexuality they are.
    Have a great time.
